Players who register as free agents will be placed on House Teams. House Teams are comprised of players who register as free agents. House teams are coached by parent volunteers.

Volunteer Coaching
- Duties
- Communication with players and families
- Booking team practices (provided by league at no cost)
- Distribution of team jerseys (provided by league)

- Mandatory background check for all volunteers
- All volunteer coaches must pass a background check
- Provided by league at no extra cost
Basketball League Rules
Game Times
Games will be played on all days of the week.
Blackout Dates: Email any blackout dates to Blake Marchant, [email protected].
- Weekday Games: Start at 5:10 PM.
- Saturday/Sunday Games: Start at 8:10 AM and run every 50 minutes.
- Younger age divisions play earlier in the day.
- Saturday games may run as late as 8:00–9:00 PM.
- Sunday games may run until 7:00–8:00 PM, depending on volume.
Scorekeepers
Each team must provide one adult scorekeeper per game.
- Report to the scorer’s table before the game starts.
- Should understand how to track personal/team fouls, timeouts, and score.
- Score sheets are available at the front desk and must be returned after the game.
Eligibility
- Players may play up to a higher-grade division.
- Players cannot play down to a lower grade division.
- Players may only play on one team per division.
Clock, Warm-Up, Halftime, Overtime
- Game Format: Two 17-minute halves (running clock).
- Warm-up: Minimum of 3 minutes (may be reduced to 1 if behind schedule).
- Halftime: 3 minutes (may be reduced).
- Last Minute of 2nd Half: Clock stops on dead balls. Continuous clock if more than 20-point differential.
- Overtime: Free throw shootout — 5 players per team, best of 5.
- If tied, sudden-death free throws.
3-Point Field Goals
Used in 3rd–8th Grade divisions.
Rim Heights
- 1st–2nd Grade: 8-foot rims (cross-court)
- 3rd Grade Rec: 9-foot rims (full-court)
- 3rd Competitive, 4th–8th Grade: 10-foot rims (full-court)
Timeouts & Substitutions
- 2 times outs per half (30 seconds each). No carryover.
- Only coaches or players may call timeouts (inform the referee).
- All substitutions must check in at the scorer’s table.
Over and Back
Enforced in all divisions.
Free Throws
- Shooting Fouls: 1 free throw =
- 2 points if the original shot missed
- 1 point if the original shot was made
- Bonus:
- 7 team fouls = One-and-one
- 10 team fouls = Double bonus
- Line Violations Enforced:
- 3rd Grade and up
- Younger divisions are lenient unless there’s an advantage
- Free Throw Line Distances:
- 1st–2nd Grade: ~12 ft
- 3rd–8th Grade: Regulation line
Defense Rules
Pressing
- 1st–3rd Grade Rec: No full-court press
- 3rd Competitive, 4th–8th Grade: Press allowed unless lead is 20+ points
Zone Defense (1st–3rd Grade Rec)
- Zone defense results in:
- 1st Violation: Warning
- Subsequent: 2-shot technical foul
Half-Court Defense
- 1st–3rd Grade Rec: Must retreat to half court after a defensive rebound
- Possession is determined by the referee
Double Teams (1st–3rd Grade Rec)
- Not allowed
- Help defense is allowed, but must recover
- Violations:
- 1st: Warning
- Next: 2-shot technical foul
Stealing & Stripping (1st–3rd Grade Rec)
- Only allowed inside the lane
- Interceptions: Allowed anywhere in front court
- Backcourt to frontcourt passes may be intercepted
- Landing in the backcourt is permitted if both feet start in frontcourt
Sportsmanship Rule
- No clear outs or isolations allowed in 1st–3rd Grade Rec
- Offending teams receive:
- 2-shot technical foul
- Loss of possession
Bench Conduct
- Only 2 coaches and players allowed on the bench.
- Coaches may stand but must not block the scorer’s table.
- Violations result in a 2-shot technical foul.
Fan Behavior
- Parents must always remain respectful.
- Referees are not required to interact with spectators.
- Poor fan behavior may result in:
- Technical foul on the coach
- Removal of fan from the gym
- Game forfeiture if fan refuses to leave
Code of Conduct
- All officials, coaches, players, and parents may be required to sign a Code of Conduct at any time.
Technical Fouls
- 1st Technical (per game):
- 2 free throws + opponent possession
- 2nd Technical (same game):
- Coach ejected
- 2 free throws + opponent possession
- 3rd Technical (season):
- Coach removed from league
- Possible team removal at the discretion of Central Iowa Sports management
